Through the collaboration the Family and Consumer Science and the Holiday Jazz Band, an Evening of Holiday Jazz made for a merry Monday to a full house in the school commons.

While Erik Hermanson and company entertained the audience with tunes that ranged from modern, like Who Let the Elves Out?” to classic, like “I’ll be Home for Christmas”, students from Amanda Whiteis’ Culinary Arts class served a tasty assortment of hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

Visual arts got a piece of the action too as Whiteis’ Design Basic class crafted table decorations for the event, and trees, some decorated by elementary students, lined the school commons perimeter.

The free-will donations that came from the 160 or so who attended—totaling about $1000 estimated Peterson—will be stuffed not only into the Dollars for Scholars’ stockings but into those of the FACS program and the band’s as well.

“They do most of the work. Dollars for Scholars just makes sure we have the event,” said organization committee member Peggy Peterson, who started planning the evening back in August.

Students in the Culinary Arts class serving at the event included Sophie Austad, Miah Bauer, Lilly Croatt, Jewel Factor, Sabrina Machado, Lily Taber, Colton Tousley, Dylan Zimmerman, Denis Dent and Matthew Holmquist.

Crafting the table decorations were Aaliyah Bauer, Olivia Braun, Curtis David, Brenna Geldner, Brianna Hollerich, Levi Murphy and Kendra Zimmerman.

Hermanson’s Holiday Jazz Band included Allison Cink and Kenzie Smith on alto saxophone; Ariel Murphy and Evelyn Keltgen on tenor saxophone; Anna Kawatski-Klein and Sierra McCabe on baritone saxophone; Madysen Seely on the flute; Maya Lassiter and Olivia Shouler on the clarinet; Melissa Miller, Jackson Shouler and Braeden Smith on the trombone; Makenna Mueller, Laci Hollerich, Jackson Bowen, Mylie Dylla, Caleb Connor and Aiden Domras on the trumpet; Dacota Lotspeich and Elijah Mons on the bass guitar; Vivian Hilfer on keyboard; and Ellie Dylla, Wyatt Williams and Reid Knish on percussion.

Other selections played by Holiday Jazz were “Sleigh Ride,” “Santa’s in Town,” “As All the Angels Sing,” “Marshmallow World,” “Jingle All the Way,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Angels We Have Rocked the House.”

Other members of the Dollars for Scholars Committee are Rhonda Omtvedt, Lisa Alitz, Natalie Hoheisel and Connie Ryan.

School food administrator Monica Manzey rounded up the food and helped with its preparation.
