Having met the required virtues of scholarship, character, leadership and service, six members were inducted into the Cleveland High School National Honor Society on Tuesday during a ceremony in the auditorium.
They are (from L-R in the photo above):
Savannah Meyer is a junior. She is active in volleyball, track & field, Student Council and FFA. She shows leadership in her role as a captain on the volleyball and track & field teams. She has served her community by volunteering at the Celebrate Me Week Camp, as a peer tutor and as a mentor in the Mentor Program at CHS. She is employed at Westwood Marina.
Adalyn Gibeau is a senior. She is active in Student council, SADD, jazz band, pep band and concert band. She shows leadership by being a good role model to younger students and as a manager of the varsity volleyball team. She has served her community by volunteering at the Celebrate Me Week Camp, at St. Anne’s Faith Formation and St. Anne’s School in Le Sueur and altar serving at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Le Center. She is employed at Anders Learning Center in Cleveland.
Carter Kern is a sophomore. He is active in the Student Council, the National FFA, yearbook, the PALS elementary reading program, the Mentor Program at CHS, SADD, concert band, jazz band, on the trap team, and with Crossview Covenant Youth Camp. Kern shows leadership by serving as the Student Council President and the FFA vice president and being a mentor in the CHS Mentor Program. He has served his community through volunteering in Student Council and FFA activities, SADD blood drives, t-ball camp, elementary track & field day and grandparent’s day. He is employed at Mayo Clinic Health Systems.
Emma Bluhm is a sophomore. She is active in FFA, Student Council, SADD, yearbook, as a mentor with the CHS Mentor Program and in concert band and jazz band. She shows leadership through her selection as upcoming vice president as the result of her extraordinary engagement in the FFA. She has served her community as a student School Board representative, with volunteer FFA activities, as a mentor at CHS and in Student Council events. She is employed at Jocko’s Bar and Grill in Cleveland as a waitress.
Vivian Hilfer is a sophomore. She is active in Student Council, National FFA, yearbook, the PALS elementary reading program, the CHS Mentor Program, SADD, with her student body offices, concert band, jazz band, Holiday Band, Hosanna Lutheran Church youth band, Hosanna Choir, Hosanna Children’s ministry and as a competitive dancer at Dance Express. She shows leadership as the sophomore class vice present, the Student Council junior president, as a mentor, as a praise team leader and small group children’s leader and Vacation Bible School (VBS) group leader at her church and as a Dance Express team captain. She has served her community through Student Council activities, SADD blood drives, FFA volunteer activities, as a Sunday School teacher and VBS leader and helper with service projects and mission trips through Hosanna’s youth group.
Anna Kawatski-Klein is a sophomore. She is active in Student Council, yearbook, SADD, FFA, jazz band, Holiday Band, concert band, the elementary PALS Reading Program, honor roll, as manager of the boys hockey team, as a mentor in the school’s mentor program and as a member of the golf team. She shows leadership as the Student Council secretary and the FFA treasurer, in planning events for the Student Council and FFA, in her role as a mentor and as a PALs teacher for elementary students and in her role organizing and teaching a summer garden camp for elementary students. She has served her community by volunteering at FFA and Student Council activities, the school T-Ball camp, elementary track & field day, grandparent’s day, garden camp and teaching at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cleveland. She is employed at HomeTown Bank in Cleveland.
Along with other service projects, recycling paper has been the NHS members’ primary school-wide service project over the years. Over the last two decades, they have recycled an estimated 3 million pounds of paper, the equivalent of 25,500 trees. Two years ago, they included aluminum cans in their recycling program.
Academic achievement in grades 9-12 determines scholastic standings. Eligible students need a GPA of 3.4 or higher. Participation in activities and maturity of attitude towards rules, school staff and fellow students determine leadership and character.
Other members who are current students are seniors Madysen Seely (president), Cassandra Connor (secretary), Abigail Osness, Olivia Shouler and Dylan Zimmerman; juniors Maya Lassiter (vice president), Jackson Bowen (treasurer), Blake Lyons and Evelyn Keltgen.
The NHS is a nationwide organization. The Cleveland chapter of the NHS was organized back in 1963. Charter members were Jane Alinder, James Beckel, Gary Dauk, Jane Dauk, Mary Grice, Betty Harty, Carol Krenik, Lee Ann Krenik, Ruth Ann Lloyd, Carol Jean Rosner, Rita Anne Schloesser, Chrystal Severson, Pat Traxler and Ronald Tschann. Over the years, over 500 members have been inducted.
Business teacher Geraldine Davis was the first advisor. Home economics teacher Marge Cooney took over in 1969 and served until 1973. English teacher and librarian Virginia Grabow was advisor into the late 1990s when Linda Ross and student counselor Betty Jo Braun begin their tenure. Braun served for 17 years. The current advisor is art teacher Bre Roberts, but this is her last year in this role.
Also at the ceremony, Principal Scott Lusk gave the welcome, Seely recited the chapter history, Shouler read the candle poem, current members lit the candles representing the four NHS virtues. Lusk and teacher David Cink presented the new members. Jackson Bowen and Evelyn Keltgen light their candles.
