Trailing the Clipper JV boys 20-14 on Monday, visiting Waterville-Elysian-Morristown blocked a Clipper punt, took over on the Cleveland 14, tied the game on a 1-yard run and ran in the PAT attempt to lead 22-20 with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter.
With the clock in their favor, the Buccaneers held on for the win.
In Cleveland’s first possession, quarterback Sam Ternes scored on a 1-yard dive to put the Clippers in front early. The Bucs stopped their PAT run.
Still in the first quarter, Ternes hooked up with Wyatt Krenik in the end zone. The Bucs thwarted the Ternes’ pass for 2 points, but the Clippers were in front 12-0.
On a 65-yard run, WEM got on the scoreboard. The Clippers stopped the 2-point run. After stopping the Clippers, the Bucs scored again, this time after recovering their own fumble and running 20 yards to the end zone. With a successful PAT run, they led 14-12 in the second quarter.
Later in the first half, the football was a hot potato for three-straight plays. Krenik picked off a WEM pass, but on the first play after, the Bucs grabbed a Ternes throw to regain possession. After the next snap though, the Bucs coughed up the ball, and the Clippers recovered to once again get the ball back.
Taking advantage this time, the Ternes-Krenik connection struck again for 25 yards that put the ball on the WEM 2. The Clippers scored on a Ternes keeper. Ternes scrambled on the PAT attempt and made it to the end zone for a 20-14 Clipper advantage at the break.
The Clippers, who were coming off a 6-0 loss in Lester Prairie last Tuesday, where the touchdown came on a pick six, take on host JWP on Monday.
