Ava Hahn kill

Ava Hahn battered Martin County West with 20 kills, the rest of Clipper offense ticked along like a Rolex, and the varsity girls powered past the visiting Mavericks 3-0 on Thursday.

Hahn’s 16th kill of the night, which she hit in the third game, was her career 1000th. As a freshman, she totaled 183 kills, as a sophomore she gained 293 more, and last year, she racked up 373 kills.

“I feel like I’ve just been working on it forever,” she said. “One thousand kills was a goal of mine since I’ve been on varsity since freshman year, and it feels good to accomplish that.”

Anika Sathoff stretched for an ace block and then knocked down a kill for the first two winners of game one, and the Clippers were off to the races. After Hahn served an onslaught of four aces for Cleveland points 20-23, the Clippers won by a landslide, 25-8, when Hahn struck for a back row kill.

Hahn inaugurated game two with a kill, and the Clippers had a seven-point flurry before serving out of bounds. The game ended 25-13 on a Sathoff kill.

After the Mavericks served into the net to start game three, Hahn swung her milestone kill. The Mavericks hung around, but with the score deadlocked at 12, the Clippers found a rhythm, and after a Hahn kill for point 24, the Clippers triumphed 25-15 when the Mavericks got caught in the net.

Hoping for a milestone daily double, the Clippers were trying to position Savannah Meyer so she would get her 1000th dig, but with 13 on the night, she came up eight short, and the senior libero had to wait a day to surpass the mark, which she did during a match against Sebeka at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse in Burnsville (see upcoming story).

Melia Sathoff nailed eight kills. Anika Sathoff had five kills. Jocelyn Bartell had four kills. Addi Holden and Taylor McCabe each had two kills. Sophie Perkins had one kill.

Hahn scratched 13 digs. Perkins, Luci Blaschko and Anika Sathoff each had six digs. Melia Sathoff had four digs. Lacey McCabe, Taylor McCabe and Maya Lassiter each chipped in one dig.

Perkins set up 33 points. Meyer added three set assists.

Anika Sathoff had four ace blocks while her sister Melia put up three. Perkins extended for one ace block.

Hahn served five aces. Meyer and each of the Sathoff sisters had two aces. Perkins had one ace serve. The Clippers only missed three serves.

The Clippers beat Sebeka but fell to MACCRAY (Clara City) later on Friday. Today, they started with Mabel-Canton to finish pool play before entering bracket games.

Hahn is just one of three in the Clipper 1000-kill club. The others are McKenna Robb (2020) and Taylor Holicky (2014). Emily Kern (2022) would have likely also been a member had it not been for the truncated 2020 season. She finished her Cleveland career at 885.

The Clippers were hoping Savannah Meyer would reach her career 1000th dig in front of the large home crowd, but the senior libero came up a few short and had to wait a day for a tournament in Burnsville.

It was Tie-Dye night for the varsity Clippers. They are, from L-R, front row: Delaney Thompson, Luci Blaschko, Ava Hahn, Lacey McCabe, Taylor McCAbe, Savannah Meyer and Valentina Rohlfing.
