District voters will have the opportunity to vote for three school board candidates in the November 5 election.
Current board chairperson Scott Miller is one of three candidates on the ballot:
What is your background? I have been a part of the Cleveland community my entire life. I attended K-12 at CPS and returned to the area after graduating college. I have five children: Emmy 6th grade, Owen 3rd grade, Kade 1st grade, Reed kindergarten, and Mack attends Anders Early Learning Center. The older children currently attend CPS and have had great experiences and teachers. I have a bachelor’s degree from Bethany Lutheran College in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance and currently work as the Chief Financial Officer for Ag Management Solutions, LLC out of Mankato.
What motivates you to run for the board? We need to continue to provide our kids the best and most opportunities available to learn and grow, not only as students but also as good human beings. I believe as a school board member we have the ability to work with the community and other constituents to help create these opportunities.
What perspective do you bring to the board that may differ from others? I believe my school board service over the past eight years has given me good insight to help move forward our goals as a district. Combining that with my professional experience in the non-profit realm helps me understand how boards function and how to move strategic initiatives through to completion.
What is your position on the operating referendum special election? In order for CPS to continue offering all the great programs we have developed in my time on the board, we will need to rely on an increase of support from our community. We have experienced significant and positive growth during my time on the school board. Since the pandemic, just like all households, we have been juggling cost increases in all aspects of the district. The board is committed to using its resources effectively while giving students a great learning environment.
What will be your top priority if elected? My top priority is and always has been trying to give students the best possible experience. This is accomplished through maintaining small class sizes, offering diversity in courses and programs and holding our students and staff to high standards in academics, co-curricular activities and personal relationships.
