After raising $10,952 for the American Heart Association’s Kids for Heart Challenge and jump roping for heart along the way, elementary students took part in a “pie-in-the-face celebration" on Friday in the auditorium.
The top fundraisers from each grade had the honor of throwing a pie into the faces of physical education teachers Charlie Haugen or Madisyn Loken.
Collecting a whopping $799.33, second grader Zeke Roberts was the top earner of all the elementary. He chose to throw a pie in the face of his sister, eighth grader Hope Roberts.
Roberts collected most of the donations from family members.
“My grandfather had something wild with his heart, so he was one of them. I really wanted to help them and feel very good about that.”
Overall, the Kids Heart Challenge was a way for students to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle while contributing to a great cause. While they did the fundraising on their own, the students engaged in a variety of fun jump roping activities in phy. ed class. The first week was all jump roping, but in the following weeks, the students did a 10-minute jump roping warmup to other activities, Haugen said.
Dollars raised help fund community initiatives, education, research and quality of care – all to fight the number-one killer in the world: heart disease.
Besides Roberts, the top fundraisers in each grade were (kindergarten, $380), Jordie Seeley (first grade, $253.19), Ginny Thompson (third grade, $610), Clay Davis (fourth grade, $340. As Davis was absent, Lane Genelin, who raised $252.22, threw the pie.), Paxton Kluntz (fifth grade, $150) and Gabe Anderson (sixth grade, raised $330)
