Asia Kern made six baskets from behind the arc to keep the Clippers in the game against visiting New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday, but the Greyhounds overcame a 10-point deficit at the half and went on to win 34-32.
Lacey McCabe’s two-pointer was the game’s first basket. Kern plopped in a couple of threes, to extend the Clipper lead. With a pair of buckets from Micah Peterson (above), an Addi Holden basket, another McCabe basket and two more threes off the hands of Kern, the Clippers led 22-12 at the break.
Starting with a three, Cathedral scored the first seven points of the second half before Mariah McCabe put in a free basket. The Greyhounds went on a run for the lead after that and were up 31-23 when Holden made the first of two free shots.
With 1:50 left, Kern put in anther three, and the Clippers were within four, 31-27. From there, the Greyhounds went to the line and made both fee throws. Lacey McCabe tossed to sister Mariah, who went to the line on the play and made both of her foul shots, and the Clippers were back within four, 33-29. The Greyhounds put in another free throw after to extend their lead.
With 25 seconds left, Kern made yet another three, but Cathedral hung on to the ball for the win.
With 18 points, Kern led all players. Peterson and Lacey McCabe each had four points. Holden and Mariah McCabe each contributed three points.
A number of junior high girls dressed for the game. Seventh grader Delaney Thompson saw playing time.
The Clippers made four of 11 free-throw attempts. Cathedral made a trio of three-point baskets and was 11 of 23 from the foul line.
The B squanders finish their season on Tuesday when they host St. Clair. Tip-off is at 4:30 pm.
