Clipper five on defense

Now with three wins in a row, the B-squad girls came from behind, fought off a threat in the final half minute and downed rival Nicollet 32-30 on Tuesday.

The Raiders had a chance to tie with under 20 seconds left, but Sam Wondra picked up a loose ball to get possession back for the Clippers.

Lacey McCabe, who was saved for a pair of halves in the varsity game, came off the bench in the second half with 10 points to lead the offensive effort.

With Samantha Baker in foul trouble the first half, and Delaney Thompson in the same situation in the second half, head coach Chris Seely was running with five players.

“They worked hard and stayed in the ball game the second half while being very tired, and they just executed.”

With a pair of free baskets, the Raiders pulled in front by a point 22-21 with just under 10 minute to go in the second half.

Thompson cut into the lane for a basket, and McCabe drove for two more points to regain the Clipper lead, but Nicollet responded with a free throw and a basket at the 4:25 mark for a 25-25 stalemate with 4:25 remaining.

McCabe found a path down the baseline and put in a jumper, and the Clippers were back up front. The Raiders put in a free shot, but McCabe took a handoff from her sister Taylor McCabe for an inside basket to extend the Clipper advantage.

The Raiders scored again, but Lacey McCabe rebounded and scored for a 31-28 Clipper lead. That was the game winner.

Thompson fouled out with 1:49 remaining. As the Clippers went into the stall, Taylor McCabe put in a free shot with 52 seconds left. A dozen seconds later, the Raiders scored to pull within a basket and then stole with half a minute left before the Wondra steal, and the Clippers held on to for the victory.

With a pair of baskets in the second half, Thompson had eight points. Addi Holden had three baskets in the first half for six total points and was playing with four fouls at the end.

“Addi did a wonderful job for us on defense,” Seely said. “She kept them off the boards the best she could. When she was playing help defense, we didn’t have anyone helping her on the boards, so that hurt us a little bit, but she did an amazing job and kept in the game while being in foul trouble.”

Olivia Reinhardt had two first-half baskets for four points. Taylor McCabe made a bucket and a free shot in the first half and a free shot in the second half for five points.

Usual starter Mollie Bowman was still sidelined with an injury.

Neither team posted a three. The Clippers made four of 11 attempts from the charity stripe. The Raiders were six of 16 in foul shooting.

The B girls return to action on Tuesday with a road trip to Randolph.
