Dear Families, Staff and Students: We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas on Tuesday. We share in the heartbreak we are all feeling for the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence. School should and must be a place where students feel completely safe and secure. I want to reassure you that safety is our highest priority and that we work very hard at creating a safe and caring place for children and staff. We work at establishing clear behavioral expectations, having positive behavioral interventions and supports, and careful crisis planning and preparedness. Our Crisis Team meets throughout the year to review our school policies and procedures to ensure that we are prepared for any emerging school safety issues. We have taken a number of additional precautions by installing 85 cameras throughout the building, securing all entrances to the building with locked doors and by enhancing our communication protocols. We pride ourselves in the relationships we build with our students and families and we have created a caring system that listens to our students regarding any potential issues that may be arising. We have hired additional staff, including a full-time school counselor in order to be more proactive in helping students deal with any stressors in their lives. We work closely with local law enforcement and seek their input in possible other measures to ensure additional safety. Teachers and staff are well trained in safety protocols. They know how to respond and will have the utmost care and concern for the safety of the students in their direct care. We also added school-wide programs that help students with behavioral expectations, positive messaging and interventions and anti-bullying efforts coupled with character development and violence prevention. We encourage our students to be active partners in keeping everyone safe. We talk to our students, we listen to their concerns and we let their questions guide how we help them with their concerns and struggles. I wish I could tell you that with absolute certainty that nothing bad like what happened in Texas will ever happen here at the Cleveland Public School. There is no absolute guarantee. However, I can tell you that there is a difference between the possibility of something happening and the probability that it will affect our school. All of us need to do our part, school personnel, students and parents need to be active participants in the solutions to these tragic events. We need to listen to our youth, our children and provide them with the skills to solve their problems in a positive manner. We know that children and teens will process these tragic events in different ways. Counselors are available to assist students who may need some extra support. We strongly encourage any students to stop by the counseling office at any time. Please join us in keeping the students, staff, and families of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in our thoughts at this time. Sincerely, Brian J. Phillips, Superintendent Cleveland Public School
